Nowadays the cost for them to integrate into smartphones is nothing but the possible benefit of it enormous. We probably never need them but if at any point something like an big catastrophe happens you will be grateful to have one and receive instructions from your government. It doesn't matter if it is a good idea to build fm receivers in smartphones or not. It probably is a good idea. But that is besides the point. As you said yourself: We probably never need them, but if at any point something like an accident happens you will be grateful to have handy instructions for first aid at the scene.
No it's not, as i already pointed out, if some accident happens your first aid instructions are useless if you didn't take some first aid lessons.
That is the reason why it is forced by law to have such a first aid course if you want a driving licence for example. At least in Europe countries it is like this. Then it should be requried by law to have a 3 months supply of cans of beans stacked in your house. Also, not everybody has a smartphone. If the government forces us to have fm receivers in our phones, because they may be handy, than it should also force everybody to buy a smartphone. The government should force every electronic manufacturer to put fm receivers in there products.
If according to you somthing like an fm receiver should be requried by law to be in smartphones, than it should be in every product as long as it doesn't affect the price unreasonably. Do you now understand my point? It isn't about the usefulness. It is the "should be requried by law" part that is stupid. Agree on radio in phones, its makes a lot of sense, problem is that its more like a nice to have feature for most, not an required one. RF ports on TV on the other side is becoming more and more obsolete.
Sending TV signals is already an pretty complicated task, it become simpler by doing it digital. Sorry but your whole argumentation is based on a false analogy. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment. Sign up for a new account in our community.

Mobile phones, one the other hand You have much to learn about communication redundancy. Your analogy doesn't work in this case. It's easy to call something stupid, it's hard to actually think about it. Posted January 25, edited. No it's not, our criteria is "it can save your life in case of an catastrophe".

LOL Radio is elegant and doesn't suffer from digital problem such as if part of the transmission is failing, you get no transmission at all. But why stop at electronic products? If I buy a new bed from ikea, the government should force them to put fm receivers in there. It Radio on the old DroidX still works fine without any internet connection and no phone service. So this is definitely not some streaming app - it is a real radio receiver.
